Please read Jim’s story which encapsulates the kind of suffering that ZANE carers deal with all the time – the story speaks for itself.
The Story of Jim Harper
Zimbabwe’s pensioners have long been abandoned.
With no state pension or social services, and no effective healthcare, they are the neglected and forgotten victims of Zimbabwe’s disastrous decline.
Whilst those who are able have emigrated in search of employment, those who are too old, and too poor and frail to start again, have been abandoned to die alone in misery and squalor.

Jim, 82, is a former farmer. His family were evicted when his farm was seized during the land reform programme.
Jim and his wife Mary fled, fearing for their lives; they didn’t even have time to rescue precious family photographs.
Jim settled as caretaker with his wife at a retirement complex. Life dealt the family a further bitter blow when their only son was killed in a car accident. Six years ago, Jim’s wife died. After Jim’s health deteriorated, he was unable to work. When his tiny savings were exhausted, Jim was destitute.
ZANE was alerted to Jim’s plight by the administrator when he could no longer pay his rent. Too proud to ask for help, Jim was severely malnourished and living with untreated diabetes. Doctors told ZANE that without help he would have soon died.
Thanks to the support of ZANE, Jim is recovering. Today, ZANE pays Jim’s rent and bills and provides him with a regular food parcel.
Jim told our field worker: “Had it not been for the loving care of ZANE, I would have died abandoned and alone.”
Sadly, Jim’s story is not uncommon.
