Reports from the wonderful ZANE caring team on the ground in Zimbabwe show once again how great the need is, not only for actual aid but for the time the carers are able to spend with lonely, frightened elderly folk who are struggling to survive.

On Thursday I visited some of ZANE’s recipients at some of the care homes. Over the last two years, it has not been possible to walk freely around most of our retirement homes, however this week I had a good visit with some of our pensioners.
Sara B
Sara B was much happier after finally managing to sort out her local medical aid, which will now allow her daughter who lives abroad to pay directly into Sara’s NOSTRA account. This of course takes a lot of worry and pressure off her.
Vera D
Vera D. was in her room lying down and looking frail. Vera lives in the ‘B’ Scheme, which means all her meals are taken care of, and she receives them in the communal dining room. Vera suffers from COPD amongst other issues. Her only child resides in South Africa and is unemployed.
Janice M
When seeing Janice M, her first question was “where have you been”? This refers to the creative therapy which we have not done for a few months. She diligently attends every session, enjoying every minute of whatever it is we are doing. Janice was very agitated and restless, complaining about her family and various other issues. She suffers from bipolar and was obviously having a bad day.
Reg G
Reg G (74 years old) who is a special needs diabetic was in good spirits although he had fallen off a chair whilst reaching up to his cupboard, damaging his leg in the process. Fortunately, Reg’s leg is not broken, however the colour and swelling of the foot is not good. His mother lives across the gardens in her own flat. Mrs. G (95) is a grant beneficiary and her grant helps to support both herself and Reg. However, her health is rapidly declining and we worry how Reg will be supported, should his mother die.
