The reports from the ZANE carers in Zimbabwe demonstrate once again how hugely important the work of ZANE is and how grateful we are for the wonderful commitment of our dedicated donors.
The Zimbabwean economy continues its downslide and the black market has resurfaced as we witness the demise of the local currency for the sixth time. A week ago, the RBZ devalued the ZWG from 14:1 to 25;1 effectively devaluing by a further 44%. This, is on top of the 50% devaluation at the time of introducing the ZWG, a couple of months ago. The above situation, coupled with the current drought which is now at its peak, is resulting in us getting numerous calls from the old folk asking about when next they will be getting their grants.
We recently experienced a very cold spell for four days and this was the time it was snowing in some parts of South Africa. The temperatures here were between 9 and 13 degrees celsius throughout the four days. However, we are now back to the scorching heat with the maximum forecast for this Saturday at 38 degrees celsius. All of these issues have a severe impact on the elderly people who are battling for survival.
Despite the terrible, dusty road, travelling through farmland en route to where Tilly J. lives, was lovely. The msasa trees were a picture, and the enormous black granite kopjes were a sight to behold. Tilly was thrilled to see us as she seldom gets visitors being so far off the beaten track. She is anxious, lonely, and tired of the long power cuts. She gets nervous being in the big farmhouse alone, especially at night.
Seeing her three nephews on the farm when they should’ve been at school was indicative that this family was facing a financial crisis. Without stored water or finances, the farming future looks bleak. She is so grateful for the help she gets to pay for her epilepsy medication and says she does not know what she would do without this help.
