Why we walked. Since completing our latest walk on 15th September, Jane and I have just visited Zimbabwe, where the daily struggle faced by ZANE’s pensioners is acute, and the queue of those desperately seeking our support grows longer each day.
Why We Walked For Zimbabwe Pensioners
We hear shocking stories from those who have been admitted to government-run hospitals – accounts of wards with no running water, frequent power cuts and a chronic lack of even basic medicines. Everywhere we look, we see abject poverty. Pensioners plead for ZANE’s help, but sadly, due to financial constraints, we can only support a limited number at this time.
Yet we have also witnessed the profound impact of ZANE’s aid. Sergeant Mogamu (78) told us that his quality of life has vastly improved thanks to the diabetes medication he now receives. We saw tears of gratitude from a couple in receipt of a regular food parcel, and we joined a lunchtime pop-up class, watching the children gobble down their food – for many, the only meal they will eat that day.
This is why Jane and I walked – to provide food, medicine, care and dignity to those whom ZANE can support. You can read two versions of our walking commentaries here: https://www.zane-zimbabweanationalemergency.com/walks/

There is the online version that was posted as we walked, and the edited and illustrated pdf version. Please let us know if you would like a hard copy.
ZANE would not exist without the continual kindness and generosity of supporters. Joy and Edward ask us to tell you this:
“We thank you for our food parcel and medicines. Without ZANE’s care and the generosity of donors, we would be facing destitution and a squalid death.”
If you have recently donated to ZANE, thank you – and please feel free to ignore this request. If you haven’t, and can afford to help, please consider donating today to support those in Zimbabwe who are struggling to survive.
Yours sincerely,
Tom Benyon OBE and Jane Benyon
