The ZANE carers on the ground in Zimbabwe continue to report on the difficulties the elderly face as they try to survive in the ever increasing chaos that has become the new normal for Zimbabweans.
ZANE Pensioner Reports
Marge G
At one of the outlying homes I found that Marge G. has lost 30 kgs and has been diagnosed with cancer. She was very tearful and said she was feeling weary and spending a lot of time inside, on her bed.
She’s passionate about gardening but can no longer bend to tend her plants. Going to church has become too difficult for her too, and pleas for a motorised scooter have been unsuccessful.
Steven and Gwen B
Another couple, Steven and Gwen B. have requested help to cover their rent. Their children help pay for Gwen’s medication (which is now costing over $400 monthly), the carer and groceries and Steven has been unable to find work because of his age. I will take this problem to the next team meeting to discuss if there is any further help we can give them.
Bernard S
Bernard S. has sadly passed away. His family in the UK messaged to thank ZANE for all the help, care and support we have given Bernard over the years – they had been forced to leave Zimbabwe for the UK some years back and are still struggling to keep themselves above water.
Josie F
Josie F. who suffers from Spina Bifida has been assessed. She is wheelchair-bound and has been indisposed for some months, suffering the effects of COVID which caused complications with her fragile intestines. As a result, she was laid off from work and has been unable to find any employment.
An Australian friend helped her financially for 2 months but, she is now out of money. Her diet is very specific because of her illness so we can’t help with a food box. Another charity has been approached by us to assist her.
